It all started when...
I'm 14 years old having a burger with my dad at the Barney’s on Piedmont Avenue when he tells me that he and my mom have decided to send me off to boarding school. In Northern Idaho. Naturally, I didn’t want to go, and be taken away from everything I knew. Little did I know that that school would transform me.
I had always struggled both academically and behaviorally. By middle school things had gotten pretty bad. This boarding school had a special focus on social and emotional learning, which was unconventional at the time. The environment was set up around making connections and building relationships. I was given ample opportunity to learn self-reflection, communication, and problem solving skills.
As an adult, I’ve had a successful career and have started several businesses, but always felt dissatisfied in my work. In 2008, I found something that I could finally connect with. I began working with students as a speaker and facilitator for the bay area based Soul Shoppe. In 2010, with the help of my wife, I founded Talk Solutions for Schools.
What I value most about this work is that I am challenged daily and able to have open and authentic interactions. I'm driven to create opportunities for people to explore what is possible outside their habitual norms. I want to encourage them to grow interpersonally, acquire perspectives that will help them better manage their struggles.
